Bahrain International Circuit is gearing up to host Red Bull Car Park Drift local qualifier, for the second year in Bahrain. Building on the success of the 2011 season, this year’s event promises to deliver some of the most exciting and cheer-inducing drift acts in the region.
Qualifying rounds will kick off this Friday (Feb 10th) in Kuwait and will tour most Gulf and Middle Eastern countries before landing for the final showdown in Beirut in July 2012.
Sponsored by Chevrolet, and with the collaboration of Virgin Megastore, Amwaj TV & Arabia Motors magazine, Bahrain’s Red Bull Car Park Drift is organized at Bahrain International Circuit, on the evening of Friday 16th March, during which the 20 most talented drivers in the kingdom will be competing for the King of Drift title.
“Another exciting season is looming ahead with the launch of the 5th version of the Red Bull Car Park Drift in a row”, said Alberto Chahoud, Regional Communications Manager at Red Bull Middle East & Africa. “Through a world class organization, a strong cooperation and synergy with strategic partners like Chevrolet, it is no surprise the competition will bring a great deal of thrill to drifting lovers in the Middle East.”
Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive at Bahrain International Circuit, commented: “Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) is delighted to have been selected as host of the local qualifier for the Red Bull Car Park Drift 2012. As ‘The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East’, BIC regularly holds its own drifting competitions, and it is always a pleasure to see many of the most talented in this discipline put on a show for the scores of fans who flock to the events. We look forward to the same excitement and intensity in the upcoming qualifiers this March, and we wish all the participants the best of luck in their hopes of gaining that lone spot to represent Bahrain in the final showdown in Beirut later this year.”
Abdo Feghali, Rally champion and Red Bull Driver will be evaluating the drivers’ performance. The evaluation will mainly assess the drift shows presented by the drivers in their modified cars, through the use of hand breaks and exertion of outstanding skills to take on turns in the most dazzling and accurate ways. In addition, engines’ sounds, the car appearance and the smoke produced by the friction of the tires will also be considered. It will all be witnessed by an interactive crowd who will have the chance to follow the qualifications and the final showdown for free.
Ahmed Soudodi, Marketing Manager for Chevrolet at General Motors Middle East Operations said: “We are very happy to renew our partnership with Red Bull in 2012. Chevrolet Camaro is one of the most iconic muscle cars in the world that excels by almost every objective and subjective measure – design, power, handling, efficiency, comfort, convenience, safety, and most of all great value.”
Besides Bahrain, Kuwait and Lebanon, Red Bull Car Park Drift 2012 will also land in the UAE, KSA, Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Iran. The current form of the competition arrived in the Middle East five years ago, before gaining regional fame and exposure two years later. This sort of competition started in Japan back in the 1970’s based on the idea of competing in a parking lot, before developing into a fully fledged international event.
20 of the best drifters will participate in this year’s event against each other, all eager to demonstrate their skills and capabilities in the art of car drifting; however there could be only one representative for Bahrain to take part in this year regional championship.
