About Adil
UAE national and Red Bull Athlete Adil Khalid Abdul Ghafar started sailing in 2001. 21-year-old Adil has been training full time since 2007 at the Emirates Sailing School in Abu Dhabi. The 2009 UAE Champion started his winning series in 2003 when won the European Championship and in 2007 the Laser Class at the Pan-Arab Games in Egypt.
In terms of sailing, Adel is a battle-hardened veteran and was the only Arab athlete who competed in the laser class at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. He presented a high level of performance that triggered the attention of many sailing professionals, knowing that the level of competition and stress at the Olympic Games cannot be compared in any way to local Championships.
Despite his young age, Adel’s participation at the Olympic Games in Beijing has opened doors for him and it is considered as a part of a long term training program that will book him a ticket to the world’s championships, especially after he won gold at the Pan-Arab Games in Egypt.
- Adil Khaled, is the latest crew member to secure his place aboard the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA)-backed Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team for the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race, making him the first Emirati sailor to compete in this ‘Everest of Sailing.’
- Adil Khaled, who represented the UAE in both the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the Asian Games in November 2010, beat more than 120 Emirati hopefuls to earn his spot in the 11-strong sporting crew, which includes Olympic medal winners, America’s Cup victors, Volvo Ocean Race champions and Guinness World Record holders.
