The Story - Red Bull Car Park Drift 2012

The Story

The story of drifting goes all the way back to the 1960's and the winding mountain roads in Japan. Back in the day, a bunch of likeminded racers set out to beat their A to B times by exceeding the grip limit of their tires when taking sharp corners. It turned out it didn't end up helping their times, but instead would evolve into something entirely new.

Drifting was born, and by the year 1970 it was already heavily featured in the prestigious All Japan Touring Car Championship. Each rider took it further than the last resulting in some awesome spectacles of driver control. Soon after, drifting evolved into a well-defined motor sport with competitions held across the globe.

Fast-forward to 2009…The Red Bull Car Park Drift was born as the first ever dedicated drifting event in the Middle East. Widely referred to as CPD, the competition assembles the Middle East's top drifters and puts them against each other in a petrol soaked quest to elect the region's number one driver. From that initial event of few drivers and a few hundred screaming fans, CPD has evolved into a regional circuit with qualifying events in 9 different countries. Last year, over 50,000 drift enthusiasts followed the series culminating in a massive finale that hosted 15 drivers.
